I'm going to kick off our series on Park & Playground Reviews with a favorite of our little guys: Blackhawk Park, 1629 Murphy Parkway in Eagan.
This park features three main play structures set in pea gravel. One is clearly designed for littler ones as it has a lower profile and offers easy access for walkers and climbers. Because our boys are still on the younger side, I appreciate these structures designed specifically for them. It's nice to allow the boys a bit more freedom as they explore. The openings to the ground are fewer (see photo below) and of course, the ground a bit closer if they happen to tumble. I think it also sends a nice message to tots themselves. Instead of always trying to fit into a world of bigger people and bigger things, this says to the little ones, "this is a place for YOU."
There are two larger play structures designed with those a bit older in mind. One includes rope & rock walls, and number of slides (curvy, bumpy and straight) all making the reward for climbing to the top of these structures worth the effort. Our nearly five year-old seemed most comfortable on this structure and while curious enough about the final structure (better for school-agers), he found it a bit too challenging. For example, the bars are placed farther apart than his hands/feet comfortably reach. No doubt he will keep attempting to 'figure out' this piece, but for now we are both okay that the park holds something to "grow into."
I love that this park can fit the needs of a number of different-aged kids. In addition to the main structures there is a mini zip line and another spinning piece that was very popular with everyone playing during our last visit. Seated dig n' dumpers are also scattered through the playspace along with a nice set of swings with both regular and bucket seats. Park benches are centrally located.
The play area is located a safe distance from the parking lot and is connected to a walking path that can be followed in the immediate area surrounding the playground as well as through the wooded setting surrounding its 40 acre lake. The park also has a large picnic shelter, a fishing pier, a sand volleyball court as well as a large open grassy space perfect for playing ball, frisbee or simply running.
When we mention heading to Blackhawk Park, we hear "I LOVE that park!" from our nearly five year-old and "Yay"! from our two and a half year-old. Our youngest (8 months) is a bit too young to shout out his thoughts, but is full of smiles while swinging and watching his big brothers have a ball.
