My Fair Lady, one of the most revered transformational stories of all time, is now at Guthrie Theater until August 31st.  This musical, adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play, made famous on the stage by Julie Andrews, and later on film by Audrey Hepburn, boasts the timeless songs such as “Wouldn’t it be Loverly", “I Could Have Danced All Night", and “Get Me to the Church on Time". With a live musical score and a cast of talented singers, these memorable and catchy tunes are sure to get your toes tapping.

Not only does the music draw you in, the set and costumes are absolutely stunning. Within seconds of the house lights dimming, the audience is instantly transported to turn of the century Edwardian England. The sets, props, and costumes aid to the grandeur of this classic tale.

From filthy frock to fancy frills, Eliza Doolittle, played by actress Helen Anker, steals the stage.  Her gafaws and snits at the beginning of the show lure you in and keep you at the edge of your seat wondering if Professor Henry Higgins can pull off this high stakes reveal. The dynamics between Anker, Eliza Doolittle, and McCarthy, Professor Higgins, are palpable. Your emotions range from uncertainty, anger, joy, and elation along with their every move.

The cast features local talent and Guthrie debut actors with an incredible list of credentials. As a dance minor and dance enthusiast, I was drawn to the intricate choreography. Joe Chvala, artistic director of a local dance company, Joe Chvala and the Flying Foot Forum, choreographed this musical; a delight within itself.
