The White Snake: A Macaroni Kid Performance Review

By Sponsored Content - Article by Liz Hanson October 16, 2014

With stunning artistry, puppetry, costumes, and staging, The White Snake is a remarkable gem. Performed on the elegant McGuire Proscenium Stage, each moment captures a rich tableaux of the classic Chinese fable.

White Snake and Green Snake venture down the mountain to the realm of the mortals. In human form, White Snake captures the attention of a young pharmacist’s assistant. Before long, the two have fallen in love. White Snake provides for her love, Xu Xian, and the two live happily until a Buddhist monk suspects the presence of White Snake’s spirit.

This fable, originally an oral tradition, has been retold for centuries in oral and written form. Within this play, Mary Zimmerman, writer and director, highlights the different versions of the tale.

My husband and I were in awe of the authentic Chinese costumes, the triumphant love story, and the comic comradery between White Snake and Green Snake. The lighting, props, and luminescent backdrop alone are a multi-faceted work of art.

This performance, one that is recommended for children ages 12 and up, is a feast for the eyes and will gently tug on your heart strings.

The White Snake is performed at Guthrie Theater only until Sunday, October 19th.  Make sure to secure your tickets today before White Snake and Green Snake scurry back up the mountain.
