OneRx: A Publisher Mom's Review

By Lori Wondra, Macaroni Kid Publisher Mom October 8, 2015
Does anyone else feel like they visit the pharmacy enough to keep it in business? I’m dreading the onset of cold/flu season with two of our three boys still young enough to put hands (and everything else) in their mouth and the other in all-day kindergarten. Last year we dealt with ear infection after ear infection with a few other illnesses thrown in for variety’s sake. It’s hard not to dread the months ahead, isn’t it?

In recent weeks, I have had the opportunity to test out OneRx, a new help for families managing, among other things, prescription information and cost. Already I can appreciate that it will save our family both time and money; already I can feel my anxiety re the upcoming cold/flu season subside a bit. How is that? OneRx allows you to comparison shop for prescription medications. It does this immediately while considering cost and the application of your own insurance plan benefits. Available as an app for both Android and ioS as well as on the web, this comparison can be done from the doctor’s office, from home or even on the road while traveling.

The process is very simple. With a quick search you can find a medication (and its generic counterpart if it exists) as well as its price at pharmacies in a selected area (with or without the use of your insurance – or any insurance at all). Based on those criteria, the app will list prices at nearby pharmacies and also let you know if a better price is available without using benefits. Who doesn’t like to know they are getting the best deal? It’s even better when you don’t bear the responsibility of researching changing prices and discount offers – OneRx does the work for you.

Just what does the savings look like? That, of course, is going to depend on the medications needed by members of your family and your insurance plan. To enter that information takes a just a moment. If you run into any challenges transferring the information from your insurance card to the app, a simple photo of your card will get the job done as OneRx will review and enter the information for you. From the moment that occurs, prescription information and prices are available at your fingertips.  In a quick search of medications we have used of late in our household, I found prices to be similar if not the same for most. However, when I entered a medication I have taken frequently over the years for migraine headaches, I found a significant cost savings. In this instance, I didn’t learn that going to a different nearby pharmacy would mean save money, but I did learn about an available generic that would save me a LOT - over $200 per prescription.

I’m excited to have this help in the months ahead. When you are sick or have sick loved ones, taking any bit of stress out of the equation has positive results. Our family will be able to fill our prescriptions with the confidence that we are getting the most out of our benefits and most savings possible. It will ease the stress of traveling if anyone becomes ill and in need of medication. It will also enable me to keep track of medications used - a simple touch stores medications to the user list. All these benefits and no cost add up to a smart choice in my book. Here’s to a healthy (and less stressful) change of season!
